The 2024 Golden Globe Awards took place on Sunday, Jan. 7. Since 1944, this well-known presentation of awards gives recognition to those having a part in creating the best film and television series of the year. Actors, directors, producers and other artists involved in the film industry have the opportunity to be nominated for some of the 27 categories presented.

The Golden Globe Awards typically occur sometime in January at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. It was apropos for this year’s awards to once again be held at the hotel. The Golden Globes reached 9.4 million viewers when it aired live on CBS at 5:00 on Sunday.

Some people watched to see which celebrities took home each award, although others tuned in to see some of the most glamorous fashion. Over the days following the awards, people continued to have conversations and post on social media about the iconic outfits worn on the red carpet. Certain extravagant outfits stood out more than others, especially the ones where celebrities dressed to match the films they starred in.

Claire Tidemann, a freshman student at Sage Creek, enjoyed watching the Golden Globe Awards and seeing all the celebrities’ complete looks.

“Margot Robbie’s dress was really, really cool and pretty,” Tidemann said. “I liked the pink on her, it looked good. And it reminded me of the movie she was starring in, so it fit well.”

Margot Robbie, who starred in “Barbie,” walked the red carpet in a replica of the 1977 SuperStar Barbie dress. The pink Armoni dress had a shiny sequin material with a v-neck cut and the accessory of a similarly shaded tulle boa.

Taylor Swift also attended the Golden Globe Awards for her movie, “The Eras Tour.” Swift beautifully wore a metallic green sequined Gucci dress. Some say her outfit resembled her inner snakeskin as a clue for when the release of her rerecorded “Reputation” album will be.

Local Carlsbad resident Aiva Taylor said, “Taylor’s green one looked amazing with her hair and eyes.” However, there was some controversy on whether her dress was one of the best or worst outfits of the night.

Tidemann disliked Swift’s dress and SCHS English teacher Emily Kalberg felt similarly about the topic. “I just don’t like the color, I don’t like the shiny green,” Kalberg said. “It kinda reminds me of a mermaid tail with like scales.”

Jennifer Lawrence wore a black velvet Dior gown that fashionably draped her body while shaping her curves. Elizabeth Olsen wore a white lace and cloth corset dress that was partially see-through on the bottom half by Vivienne Westwood.

“I do like the corset,” Kalberg said of Olsen’s look. “But I don’t like the lace; the blocky look of the lace, different material and lace.”

Issa Rae dressed in a Pamella Rolland shiny copper gown with chevron designs.

SCHS senior Will Weitz said, “Rae decided to wear a statement color that matched her skin tone gorgeously and chose Pamella Roland as her designer instead of a mainstream European brand.”

Emma Stone wore a shimmery Louis Vuitton floor-length slip dress that was nude and slightly see-through with silver and red flowers. The gown also had a low v-neck cut and a slit in the middle. “I really like Emma Stone’s dress,” Kalberg said. “I think that’s like so classy and just elegant and she looked really really beautiful.”

Oprah Winfrey dressed in a Louis Vuitton purple velvet gown that had long sleeves. She chose to wear purple to intentionally represent the movie “The Color Purple,” which she coproduced.

Tidemann said, “I liked Oprah Winfrey’s because I think the purple looked really good with her skin tone and I liked her hair with the dress.”

Reese Witherspoon chose a simple velvet black dress with a pink one-shoulder sleeve bow.

“I like, love it,” Taylor said. “It looks so cute, kinda basic but also perfect.” Witherspoon also attended the awards ceremony with her son, Deacon Reese Phillipe, which fans found a cute accessory to her attire.

Tidemann found one dress that stood out amongst many: Natalie Portman’s Dior white gown that was completely embroidered with small flowers of different colored beads.

“My favorite dress was Natalie Portman’s,” Tidemann said. “She had a beautiful dress, I think it flattered her body really well and I liked how it was different but simplistic.”

Weitz also had his heart set on her look. He said, “Both the simplicity and yet hint of madness appeal to me and other art lovers.”

Meryl Streep wore a black sequined blazer and skirt with a white blouse. “Hers is very much giving ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ but I kinda like it,” Taylor said. “It kinda looks cute.”

Selena Gomez wore an Armani Privé red silk dress with a slanted bottom cut. It had a black belt with triangle cutouts connected with black roses above it.

Weitz said, “Selena Gomez who, despite picking a gorgeous shade of red, visually distracts the viewer with the black flower column design on her top.”

Taylor Swift walks the Golden Globe red carpet in a striking Gucci metallic green dress with side cutouts. She paired her dress with matching green Christian Louboutin high heels and De Beer Arpeggia collection earrings. Likewise, Kalberg said, “I know that rose style is super trendy right now, but I don’t like a red and black combo; I feel like that’s not flattering.”

Jennifer Lopez wore a Nicole + Felicia bubble gum pink hourglass gown that ruffled in flower sleeves falling around her elbows. Taylor said that J-Lo looked “like a Christmas present.”

Heidi Klum attended in a strapless red sequin top and matching red silk ball gown skirt that flared with different pieces of fabric. Mariel Haenn and Rob Zangardi styled her. Taylor said, “Heidi Klum’s a goddess, her dress looks fantastic on her.”

Hailee Steinfeld wore an elegant pink silk Prada gown that had silver rhinestones around the neck and a train that trailed behind her. She completed the look with black mesh long gloves that stopped above her elbow.

“I do love the breakfast at Tiffany’s reference,” Kalberg said. “It’s not in my top five but she does look very classy and elegant.”

Florence Pugh wore a Valentino mesh red gown with flowers sewn on it. It had skinny straps and a v-neck cut. “I thought she looked amazing,” Kalberg said. “Florence Pugh looked so good, that red dress [was] beautiful with her like short white hair.”

Da’Vine Joy Randolph wore an overly exposed Rodarte plum gown with sequined ruffle cups and a waist ruffle.

“It was so weird,” Taylor said. “Why are you wearing that? Like you look like you’re a clam off of the little mermaid.”

Famous singers and songwriters Billie Elish and Dua Lipa were invited to the Golden Globe Awards due to their song nominations from the “Barbie” movie. Billie Elish wore a beige one pleated skirt with a white collared shirt and oversized black blazer. Her outfit paired with thrifted high heels that she favored.

Kalberg said, “She pulls it off really well and I think that she is the only one that would be able to look good in that outfit.”

Weitz, on the other hand, found her outfit very unsuitable for the Golden Globes. He said it reminded him “of a mutilated store mannequin on Black Friday.”

Dua Lipa, meanwhile, wore a black dress that tightly fit her but flared out slightly above her knees until reaching the floor. It also had gold designs embroidered from her waist up. Her dress was designed by Daniel Roseberry.

Lipa strutted the red carpet well but had a hard time sitting in her seat because her dress was very stiff. Tidemann said, “I hated Dua Lipa’s, it looked so gross. It wasn’t it.”

Kalberg had mixed feelings on her look.

“I mean I don’t not like it, but I also don’t love it,” she said. “And I saw that she wasn’t able to sit down. It’s different, I like the unique aspect of it but the three gold things look like fingers to me. I don’t know. I feel like it’s a real interesting choice.”

Not only girls attended in fashion; Leonardo DiCaprio wore an Armani tux, while Robert Downey Jr. wore a Dior plum suit paired with rose-tinted sunglasses. Colman Domingo chose a unique black Louis Vuitton suit with a Nehru collar and gold brooch.

Weitz said that Domingo’s “outfit proves that it is the little things in life that give us joy with his small trinkets and accents of camp.”

Cillian Murphy dressed in a black Saint Laurent tux and Justin Hartley wore a light brown tux with a black bow tie. Pedro Pascal attended in a Bottega Veneta black turtleneck long-sleeve shirt with white line swirls and black pants. He also wore a sling.

Weitz said, “The worst dressed, Pedro Pascal is first because the white squiggles look unappealing and more like shriveled-up pieces of gum than glamorous couture.”

The Golden Globe Awards had a variety of different looks, ranging from chic black gowns to sparkly attire. While there are contrasting opinions on which outfits were the best and worst of the night, it’s clear that the red carpet was filled with mesmerizing and memorable celebrities.
