Disney’s Moana Has Heart and Beautiful Animation

Chris Beauchamp, Staff Writer

When it comes to animation, Pixar is one of the best at bringing beautiful scenery and memorable characters. Some of their best work is the Toy Story franchise, The Incredibles, Wall-E, and their most recent animated film, Zootopia. Now, Pixar brings us their latest animated picture, Moana. What is Moana about? How does it compare to other Pixar films? Is it a success or a failure?

In my opinion, Moana, is a great film with exceptional animation. It has great environments that Pixar is yet to use in their animated films– other than Lilo and Stitch. There’s also a great message about friendship and never giving up, which is something that both kids and adults can relate to. I highly recommend that moviegoers see this film in the 3D format so you can get the best movie experience possible.

Moana tells the story of Moana, played by Auli’i Cravalho, who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself as a master wavefinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. Along the way, she meets the once-mighty demigod named Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson, and together, they will embark on the open sea on an action-packed quest.

This is Cravalho’s first film and her acting debut. She has an adventurous and fun attitude, which follows the same personality as other Disney princesses in a handful of Pixar films. She was an exciting character to follow and has moments where the audience can truly care for her.

Johnson’s character, Maui has a very interesting and sad background, which makes you sympathize for him throughout the entire film. However, he also has a very funny attitude and is very relatable for the viewers. In addition to Cravalho and Johnson, the film has a wonderful variety of songs provided Lin Manuel Miranda, which flowed great with the pace it was going at.

This film has a plethora of positives, however, it does have one minor flaw. That flaw is that in the beginning of this film, it starts out very slowly and solely focuses on Moana and her background. The pacing needed to be faster to keep up with the flow of the picture.

Overall, Moana is a great film with unbelievable animation and great acting from both Cravalho and Johnson. The film has a great message and has characters that will leave a lasting impact and are very relatable for viewers. This is another success for Disney and Pixar. Next year, Pixar will be bringing us Cars 3. Have you seen that trailer? Hopefully Cars 3 gets the same love and care as Moana got here from Pixar Animation.
