Corrections and Requests to Remove Content

The Sage staff works hard to ensure no material that is obscene, invasive of privacy, libelous, slanderous, or encouraging disruption, violence, or unlawful acts will be published.  After publication, articles may be updated as new information develops, and mistakes or inaccuracies will be corrected. The Sage generally does not remove content or take down articles except in extreme circumstances. Alterations to articles will be made clear to the reader.

Content Decisions and Letters to the Editor

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right of Freedom of the Press, and the State of California’s “Ed Code 48907 affirms the right of high school newspapers to publish whatever they choose, so long as the content isn’t explicitly obscene, libelous, or slanderous, and doesn’t incite students to violate any laws or school regulations.” Content is chosen carefully and thoughtfully in regard to the community and the school, and student staff has the right to write and publish appropriate and newsworthy information. Readers have the ability to submit ‘Letters to the Editor’, which can be submitted to [email protected]. ‘Letters to the Editor’ should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for style. No material that is obscene, invasive of privacy, libelous, slanderous, or encouraging disruption, violence, or unlawful acts will be published.

Withholding Names

Withholding the name of an individual is generally avoided but sometimes necessary. If the use of an individual’s name hinders their ability to safely recount and report on an event or occurrence, their name will be withheld in the best interest of the student’s safety. The request to have an individual’s name withheld must be presented to The Sage staff before the article is published.
