For the last few weeks of school, there were many events planned for the senior class, such as Senior Awards Night, Senior Legacy Night, Grad Night and a possible Senior Trip.

From Dave and Buster’s to a fun day at the beach, from a Padres game to a BBQ at Alga Norte, Sage Creek High School’s Senior Council has decided to change the Senior Trip to something a little more simple. It will not take place in Alga Norte anymore; instead, they are planning to host an activity at school, because administration did not approve any of the ideas listed above.

Fabiola Sanchez, a member of the Senior Council, said that due to a few problems, they had to change the trip to an event taking place at school.

“As of right now, it has changed a lot because of many reasons… We have to have an activity of at least four hours, so we are [planning] a movie marathon in the gym where everyone can just bring their pjs and their sleeping bags and we’ll have food, candy, desserts, popcorn, drinks, etc,” Sanchez said.

Another member of the Senior Council, Julia Hayashi, stated that administration wanted the Senior Council to organize an activity in campus instead due to a few reasons.

“Mr. Morales wanted it to be on campus because it is easier to facilitate and keep count of everyone,” Hayashi stated.

This wasn’t the only issue. According to Mrs. Shinto, the administrators’ assistant, the school’s budget was too low to organize such events since most of their funding had already gone towards other senior activities, like paying for buses.

“Towards the end of the year, we’ve exhausted our funding; we didn’t have more money [for buses]. We used quite a bit of money [so that we could] transport the seniors to Lux Art Institute in Encinitas for breakfast, so that took up a big part of the budget, [which] was about $2000 dollars for the buses,” Shinto explained.

Domenic Manente, the Senior Council advisor, also stated that money was a big problem that the Senior Council didn’t want to put towards the Seniors; they wanted to host a simple and free event for students to enjoy.

“One of the biggest things we’ve run into though is the cost of any of these events; it can be quite a bit. And it is not so much that it costs a lot but it’s the cost in addition to prom, in addition to cap and gown, and in addition to prom night, it [just] starts to tally up,” Manente commented.

Manente also stated that the Senior Council didn’t want to plan a big event, such as a trip to Alga Norte, right before Senior graduation.

“We talked about Alga Norte, but we didn’t want to offer something that we felt was subpar for our seniors, and we felt that planning graduation the day after would also be difficult. We felt like that wouldn’t be right for the seniors to provide something where we wouldn’t be able to give our full effort to so we’d rather provide something that we could provide our whole effort to and do our best for [them],” Manente stated.

Senior Movie Night has not yet been approved by administration (meaning it could potentially change), but Manente is confident that it will, and is very excited to host a fun event for seniors to end the year.

“We are going to send out a survey where students vote on what movies they’d like to watch and we’d love to have anyone who wants to come, and sponsor that event for everyone,” Manente concluded.
