“Battlefield 6” appears on Steam’s top-selling page. Despite its 70 dollar price tag, it has maintained its position as the number one seller.
On Oct. 10, 2025, video game publisher Electronic Arts released its newest AAA title, “Battlefield 6,” developed by DICE. This explosive new installment to the series has taken the gaming world by storm, selling over 7 million copies within its first three days of release and sparking a possible comeback for this thought-to-be-dying franchise.
Many fans of the series feared for the future of the franchise due to the numerous technical issues, unsatisfactory gameplay and general distrust between the community and DICE and EA that came with the unfinished release of “Battlefield 2042.” This controversial installment to the franchise created a desire for a return to form, leading to speculation as to what the next title will be.
Rumors surrounding “Battlefield 6” began in 2023, with the first leaks about the game quickly gaining attention. Many fans would end up responding to the rumors with skepticism after losing trust in EA and DICE, but only more and more anticipation would build after EA introduced Battlefield Labs, a playtesting program that began with an alpha phase, which was designed to provide community feedback for DICE.
After EA put out its first official announcement in the form of a reveal trailer, the hype only grew stronger, and to add fuel to the fire, “Battlefield Labs” entered a closed beta testing phase from Aug. 6 to Aug. 7, 2025, inviting several internet content creators and streamers to build publicity. Later, from Aug. 9 to Aug. 17, the open beta was released to the rest of the public over two separate weekends.
Fans responded to the beta with open arms, players like Revan1939 stating, “I played the beta, it’s pretty fire. It made me want to install another Battlefield during the off week.”
Additionally, players like Birdslayer praised the open beta for being a significant improvement from “Battlefield 2042.”
“[He] enjoyed it more than 2042,” said Birdslayer. “It fixed a lot of problems… and it was really great to have a full lobby. It was also really easy to pick up.”
The open beta would end up hitting over 500,000 players on Steam alone, breaking the record for the largest open beta in the series’ history; however, estimates suggest that over 5 million players on every platform combined logged onto the game.
Following the release of “Battlefield 6,” it became one of EA’s fastest-selling titles since the release of “Battlefield 3” in 2011 and established itself as a major comeback for the series. Fans and critics alike praised the game for its return to its original roots, allowing DICE and EA to regain the trust of their community yet again.
The release of “Battlefield 6” has been quite stable, with many players reporting excellent optimization. Players like sophomore Devon Auhorn really enjoy the final release, praising in an email correspondence how,
“EA went back to the basic Battlefield class system after how they did it in 2042 with special operatives; the other thing I like is that the movement is somewhat more like older Battlefield games, unlike how it was in 2042, as well as the removal of a lot of 2042’s systems regarding [weapon] attachments.”
That being said, the release of “Battlefield 6” isn’t completely spotless. Auhorn gave critiques, saying,
“I think the movement is too fast-paced for a Battlefield game; it feels too much like Call of Duty with people jumping around really fast… other gripes I have for 6 are that they are adding unrealistic & silly cosmetics, which I feel takes away from the immersion which Battlefield games have often done really well, as well as the weapons not being class-locked, unlike in the older games in the series…A large problem I have noticed online is that the hit registration has many problems, and there are many cases of [projectiles] not hitting their target even when they clearly should have.”
The future of the franchise looks bright as of now. In addition to a generally well-received launch, DICE plans to implement a live-service model to the game, with their first major update to the game, Season 1, aiming to bring fresh new content, such as new maps, game modes and a battle royale mode, which was released on Oct. 28, 2025.
However, only time will determine the success of this franchise, whether it be in the near or distant future.
