The Surf Team kicked off the 2025-2026 school year with their first practice on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Dip in the Road Beach. Surfers and coaches alike are excited to start the season with new and returning members.
Head Coach Jeremy Cannon, a previous middle school surf coach and a 8th year returning coach at Sage Creek, emphasizes the importance of working with new and old members.
“I am always excited for a new season to start because it’s fun to see new students join the Surf Club,” Coach Jeremy Cannon said.
Zachary Fandey, a sophomore who rides longboard and shortboard, is ready to kick off the year.
“I am super excited to surf with a bunch of new students and to surf in the SSS comps. I can already tell that we have a lot of potential,” he said.
The Surf Team is made up of surfers who are excited to compete against other schools to win points for Sage Creek at the Scholastic Surf Series (SSS) competitions. The SSS competitions are high quality competitions created to give high schoolers a feel for how professional surf contests in the WSA will feel by using professional scoring and judging.
The Surf Club is a club of students who are passionate about surfing, and they can compete for the Team, or can just have fun in the waves with fellow students and the coaches.
Coach Jeremy can’t wait to welcome new and old surfers to the Club for a new season.
“I’d like to grow the Surf Club and encourage more kids to join, and certainly do our best to win our competition season,” he expressed.
The Surf Team has been on a great winning streak for the past few years. In the Scholastic Surf Series, the Sage Creek Surf Team has placed first or second for five years in a row.
This team is always welcoming and encouraging to students who are considering joining.
“The Surf Club is a way to get in the ocean with friends from school and the competitive side is a good way to build team camaraderie,” Coach Jeremy said. “I would like to encourage kids new to surfing, especially kids new to competitive surfing, to try a surf competition.”
Fandey enjoys surfing and competing and encourages others to join.
“To those who are not sure about joining the team or club, surfing on Wednesday evenings with the club is some of the most fun I’ve ever had. And I have so much fun when I’m surfing in a contest for the team, even when I lose, I still have lots of fun,” he exclaimed.
Fandey enjoys cheering on his teammates when they are competing and being a part of a great community of surfers.
“What I love most about the surf team is cheering on my teammates and the rush of adrenaline that I get every time I stand up on a wave. It’s the main reason I love to surf,” Fandey said.
Fandey also loves the community of surfers that he is surrounded by when out in the water. This is one of the reasons that he loves being on the Surf Team and in the club.
Surfers of all skill levels are welcome to come to practices on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. and join the Surf Club.
The first Surf Team competition of the season will be on Sunday, Oct. 19 at the Oceanside South Jetty, so come cheer on your Sage Creek Surf Team!
