The Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve is to the right of the high school and has various trails with wildlife and flowers. This reserve has approximately nine running trails that range from different elevations and difficulty levels.

A trail that looks over Sage Creek’s campus showcases the school and surrounding neighborhoods. It’s a great hike with beautiful scenery where you can exercise, take photos or connect with nature.

On the trail, hikers can reach a large water tower, which is a noticeable sight from certain spots in the school and nearby areas. From there, Sage Creek’s baseball and softball fields, along with their practices and games, are observable from the trail, depending on the time.

A California ringlet, a species of butterfly, rests on a flower stem in hopes of either nectar or a place to relax. This is an example of the very few insects that can be found on the trail.
