On March 26, 2025, Elon Musk emailed all DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) employees with what was effectively a layoff letter.

With DOGE employees reportedly earning six-figure salaries, the head of DOGE, Elon Musk, says that they were next to go.

“The amount of money that I’m saving for U.S. taxpayers is enormous,” Musk said. “With this one cut alone, I’ve cut an estimated $40 million. That’s roughly $0.24 per taxpayer!”

Being on the receiving end of a layoff was shocking to most employees.

“The work I was doing for the government was incredibly important,” former DOGE employee Knott Reele said. “I feel like my job wasn’t even properly looked at before my layoff.”

Elon Musk says that this is only the start, and he plans to cut much more.

“One second, I have to tweet something,” Musk said. “Yeah, I plan to cut billions more from federal spending. Hold on, I just got another idea for a Tweet.”

Some concerns have been raised about whether Elon Musk can single-handedly run an entire government department while also being busy with SpaceX and Tesla.

“I absolutely will be able to,” Musk said. “It’s just like my 14 kids. They all get a lot of personal love and support from their father, even though I have to focus on the other 13 at the same time.”

Out of all of the cuts that Musk has been doing in the DOGE position, this one was received with the least amount of backlash. However, time will tell if the government will be able to function without these DOGE employees and if they’ll need to be hired back.
