WIRED first reported an AI generated art tool that went viral in June of 2022. People began using AI in artistic ways that lacked the hard work of humans. Generative AI slowly became frequently used by up-and-coming “AI artists” to create pieces that appeared similar to the work of humans but persisted in having inconsistencies that made it look abnormal.
Keira Casey, Sage Creek senior and 2D artist, spoke about embracing AI art in 2022, but now has a revelation of both the positives and negatives of AI-generated art today.
“I thought it wasn’t going to be a threat to artists because it was new,” Casey said. She was unsure what AI could do in its past state.
“We hadn’t seen much of what was going to happen yet and not as weary of the prospect of artists losing their jobs,” she said.
Artificial intelligence takes inspiration from different media and creates out of existing work. People, in contrast, recollect their personal experiences to connect with the audience.
Though AI is becoming a consistent medium to make art, Casey believes that artists may use AI as a source of inspiration. However, it becomes a problem when new artists are over-reliant on AI.
When asked about AI’s ability to help beginner artists cheat, Casey said, “People make the excuse that AI art is an outlet for people who want to express their creativity, but maybe don’t have the talent to do so.”
“I think those people should consider that no one is born with talent.”

Tools have key features to help the learner. They can widely expand a person’s perspective when they are having an artist’s block. No matter how useful a tool can be, it should not be relied on, so the person can challenge themselves to think of the ideas on their own.
Recently, companies have resorted to the use of AI as it’s inexpensive compared to their employees.
“It’s more advantageous when they don’t have to pay people or wait or ask them to revise,” Casey said.
In the workplace, AI has become a valuable tool for those in need of inspiration. Although, as much as it’s helpful, it should be acknowledged that people would not be wise to use it piece-by-piece. Workers should consider that they can use a piece of the AI inspiration and expand upon it themselves.
There’s a clear difference between original work versus something that came from an algorithm according to Casey.
“There’s an example that AI art physically cannot create an image of a wine glass that’s completely full,” Casey said. ”There are no images out there of wine glasses that are completely full.”
Humans are creative beings that may create anything that they imagine. According to Casey, “AI takes the average of what they see, but doesn’t apply reason to the piece of art.”
She believes that people use it as often as they do because they’re excited about the experimental technology that the future of humankind may become.
No matter how far the world progresses in technology, nothing will replace the hard work of humans because they can imagine and create, which is something that an algorithm will always lack.
