On Jan. 19, Sage Creek’s elite robotics team Crow Force competed in competition three of the FTC (First Tech Challenge) in the Sage Creek High School gym. Crow Force’s goal was to qualify to participate in the World Championship in April by winning more matches and gaining more points than the 200-300 other teams in California.
Crow Force won five of their six matches and qualified for the finals in April by beating the many competitors.
With some teams having more than 20 people, the competition was fierce. This tournament highlighted the technical and mental abilities of young high school students. The coding and building of these robots take days to weeks to build. If one thing goes wrong, everything goes wrong.
The objective for Crow Force was to replicate their tournament one performance where they set a record. Points are based on how they get one step closer to winning the World Championship.
Even with an intimidating number of teams and robots present for the third tournament, there is still plenty of opportunity for fun, collaboration and meeting of the minds with some really cool designs.
“We get to talk with each other, compete and strategize,” said Sophia Gocan, a member of the Crow Force Robotics team.
“I love seeing all the other team’s robots because I usually only get to see the Sage Creek robots. But when we get here, I get to see the rest of San Diego’s designs,” said Coach Musson.
At their last competition, Crow Force beat almost all of the 200-300 teams in Southern California, ranging from San Diego all the way up to Los Angeles, and qualified for the finals where they will go against the best teams in their league.
But for Crow Force, this is only the beginning of their journey.
