The healthcare field provides almost infinite possibilities—from helping patients to conducting research. At Sage, students are already discovering their passion for medical occupations through our healthcare pathway. Students also have the ability to dig deeper and receive experience from local colleges and organizations, preparing them for their near future.
What Sage Creek offers:
Sage Creek offers students courses to support their healthcare journey. In the Biomedical Science Pathway, students gain experiences through engaging courses like Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body Systems. These classes create a foundation and progress deeper to help students learn medical problem-solving and explore anatomy.
Paige Berroteran, Human Body Systems teacher and expert in molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics and data analysis, said, “Students can earn Nursing 151 credit and gain STEM skills like data analysis, lab techniques and scientific communication. They also develop research projects, visit a cadaver lab and get CPR certified.”
Sage students share their interest in healthcare, from neuroscience to medical microbiology.
Advanced placement classes like AP Biology and AP Chemistry build necessary skills for specializations such as neurology.
Roza Alamdari, a Sage Creek sophomore interested in neuroscience, said, “When taking biology and chemistry in my freshman year it prepared me for higher level classes such as AP Biology and Human Body Systems. Being in the Biomed Career Pathway helps me to deepen my study of neurology as I learn how body systems work and beyond.”
Some students choose to study neuroscience while others decide to study different medical areas.
Sage Creek sophomore Islah Guckenberger has a different medical interest in medical microbiology primarily because it is very undiscovered and complex. Guckenberger added on to this thought and said, “You can help people by developing medicines and Biomed is helping by giving us experience with microscopes and understanding cell functions.”
Establishing Foundations with Local Colleges
Students should consider partnering with colleges to excel in their knowledge and get recognized. They offer tons of specific access to healthcare programs, some being at Mira Costa College. At this college, Body Systems Survey is just one of the dual-enrollment opportunities that provide students with credits while expanding their exposure to coursework on a college level.
Another college with medical opportunities is San Diego Miramar College. The college focuses on biotechnology, the combination of biology and research. Their focus is to help students discover lab science and pharmaceuticals, crucial for many medical-related occupations.
Experience Outside the Classroom
It is essential to work outside the classroom and gain hands-on experience. At the Tri-City Medical Center, healthcare observation and patient care volunteer opportunities are provided.
Another organization, the American Red Cross offers Blood Drive volunteer work and disaster response training.
Wrapping it up
When it comes to healthcare, there are a wide range of opportunities with so much room to grow. From working in an occupation where students are passionate to positively impacting others’ lives (and saving them), the healthcare industry is great for exploring their potential. It is a very competitive field, but the possibilities for students’ futures are infinite!
