The varsity baseball team at Sage Creek has started their work on the field and in the gym for spring season. So far, the team began their practices last week with two on-field workouts on Monday and Friday and hit the gym on Wednesday.
In the 2022-2023 season, varsity won the D2 CIF championship 7-1 against Cathedral Catholic. The squad ended last season with an 18-13 season with one tie. They made it to the D1 CIF playoffs but lost to La Costa Canyon in the second round. Some of the teams in Sage’s league include Fallbrook, Westview, and Mission Hills. Their record from the league was 8-6-1. Some of the returning players are Max Biehl, Jamo Familio and Elijah Stevens.
Over the summer, players from all levels participated in a program that ran from June 24 to Aug. 8. They also helped lead a Bobcat camp for kids to get introduced to how the baseball program at Sage works including basic skills like hitting, catching and fielding.
On Mondays and Fridays the freshman, JV and varsity teams split into groups to work on either the batting cages or on the field.
The head coach of the varsity team, Ryan Madson, who has taught the team since the school opened, is proud of how last season’s team performed. ”We had a great core of guys returning from the championship team– we had big wins against Torrey Pines, Carlsbad, Eastlake and Poway.”
Madson said his goals for this season with the squad are to compete in D1 and Open Division. “We want to play together as a team like every year and do our best to be in a position to make a playoff run,” Madson said.
After winning the Division 2 championship, the team moved to Division 1 last year.
Through all the training, the team will be prepared for the season in the spring and, hopefully, the playoffs afterward.
