While driving down La Costa Avenue, a large sign might have caught your attention. The sign states “World’s Best Salsa And Guacamole,” but is this an exaggeration or a fact? The Sage investigated this claim to see if it was really the heat.

Encinitas Farms is known for its intimate, simple, home-cooked salsa recipes with common household ingredients. We tried their Ranchera, Mango salsa, pico de gallo and guacamole. The salsas were compared to generic store-bought salsa to have a base flavor to work off of.

The salsa Ranchera is a simple medium-spice salsa made with tomatoes, cilantro, green onions and chilies. Compared to the generic salsa, there is much left to be desired. We ranked this salsa second out of the four salsas that we tried. The salsa flavors were very simple and uninteresting other than the slight kick of spice near the end. Overall, it was less than what we had expected.

The next salsa that we tried was the Mango salsa, the ingredients of the salsa include mango, bell peppers, cilantro, red onion, vinegar, lemon juice and chilies. This salsa was the most complex one that we tasted and it showed. We ranked this salsa first out of four, as the complex mixture of the mangoes’ sweetness and the chilies’ spiciness created a delightful combination. Evidently, this salsa exceeded our expectations.

Second to last, we have the pico de gallo. This salsa includes tomatoes, cilantro, chilies and onions. Once again, this salsa was, unfortunately, nothing special, ranked last on the list, just above the generic salsa. Though the texture was nice, it lacked general flavor and consistency as it was very watery. It was like an everyday, common pico de gallo.

Last but not least we have the guacamole, this classic condiment still took the cake although having the fewest ingredients. Despite the consistency still including the decadent avocado chunks, it was still very creamy and enjoyable. This ranked number one out of all the salsas we rated.

If we were to recommend buying something from Encinitas Farms, we highly recommend the guacamole and Mango salsa as they were the most impressive. Encinitas Farms’ salsa didn’t quite reach “World’s Best” status, but it was more exceptional than your average store-bought salsas.
