Sage Creek’s New Flag Football Team Could End “Purple Reign” in CIF Championship
“S-C-H-S B-O-B-C-A-T-S” is a cheer Bobcats never thought they would hear on a football field. But the rise of the Bobcat’s untraditional team has shocked everyone, including Sage Creek’s very own.
After being in Carlsbad High School Football’s shadow for its entire existence, Sage Creek decided to create a flag football team in an attempt to even the playing field between the two high schools.
While there has been some controversy around a flag football team competing in CIF football playoffs, the Bobcat’s heart and commitment to their “football” team seems to be enough to compete with one of the best teams in the county.
Jason Burger, a CIF crowd official, speaks on the controversy of the new team:
“You know maybe this team isn’t playing by the same rules, but it will definitely draw in crowds, and that’s all that matters at the end of the day.”
Aside from the obvious money the team would bring in, which can never hurt, the SCHS students are thrilled to finally have a team to root for besides the rivaling school.
Freshman at SCHS Ranya Jafry expressed her feelings about this exciting development.
“It’s nice to finally feel like a real high school. I didn’t think our Bobcats knew what a football was,” Jafry said.
Although Sage Creek students are excited to fully participate in traditional high school events besides basketball and volleyball games, CHS students seem to be confused about how this underdog team came to be.
Carlsbad Freshman Alessia Mattucci shares her confusion about how a flag football team is rising up CIF’s ranks. “I’m not really sure how they got into CIF, but I guess they’re kind of good,” said Mattucci.
Maybe Sage Creek’s new “team” isn’t following the traditional rules, but rules are meant to be broken.
More updates about this anticipated head-to-head match will be posted on April 1 at 8 p.m. PST.
