“Star Wars” and the Fall of a Mythos

Apr 26, 2018

Return of The Jedi was supposed to be the happy ending we all wanted in “Star Wars”, the prophecy complete and the Sith destroyed. In the original expanded universe, the Sith themselves did not resurface until 50 or 60 years after the Battle of Yavin and did not come into prominence once more until a 100 years after. Instead, the “Star Wars” cast evolved and created new families and adventures. They fought extra-galactic empires and faced another Galactic Civil War.

What the Sequels create is a post Return of The Jedi where none of the past six movies matter. The Dark Side still rose again, and the New Republic was just blown away after 4 planets out of the hundreds in the galaxy. How did it come to ruining the mythos of “Star Wars”? Should we have just stayed at six movies?

The Original Trilogy are indie films. Made out of Lucas’s own pocket with assistance from 21st Century Fox and his own self-made company Lucasfilm and its tributary companies. They are solely directed by Lucas and with his vision in mind, his mythos and his world. Never mind the soppy and downright terrible scenes of Episode I or II, they were still unique movies that one can call “Star Wars.”

When Lucas decided that it was time for him to move on and keep “Star Wars” in good hands, he sold it to Disney with the hope that they would preserve its legacy. In his parting comments, Lucas stated, “I always made sure each new movie was fresh, with new locations, new vehicles and everything,” hopefully Disney and Kathleen Kennedy the head of Lucasfilm would protect and secure “Star Wars” future.

Disney has both secured “Star Wars” Legacy and killed it at the same time. They have now made two mega blockbusters and one “Star Wars” Story. In turn, creating an economic drive to produce more “Star Wars” merchandise and films. I turn they have killed the mythos and heart of “Star Wars”

Sure they may visit new planets, but we never get to see the New Republic in action or its new vehicles or people. You know, the New Republic they had been fighting for since A New Hope? Well too bad go to the comics or books to even hear about it.Canto Bight was once yet again, another Cantina scene and the Battle of Crait was heavily inspired by the Battle of Hoth.

Even more shaming is that X-Wings and Tie-Fighters are literally the same from IV-VI except for upgrades and paint jobs. The AT-M6 walker is literally just a big AT-AT and once again they use Death-Star tech.  Lack of design is hurting “Star Wars” now more than ever as the Expanded Universe was chock full of new ships to be seen anywhere within the Mythos.

Even going back to The Force Awakens, so many shots are either copied or reversed compared to A New Hope. They are now just running on the powerful nitrous of nostalgia pandering and the dangling stick of a true “Star Wars” sequel. Episode IX is very far away and eventually, X, XI, and XII will, unfortunately, grace the big screen.

To “Star Wars” fans, it can be comparable if they just started making new Lord of The Rings movies because why not they need money or the reason why Hobbit was in three movies instead of one. People spend their time, effort, and life to decode the worlds that we create while corporate shills corrupt and streamline something that they love. Ironically Disney mimics themselves and their own narrative within Canto Bight and their manipulation of the people who love “Star Wars”
