The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team watches on as play is stopped for a contact violation.

On Thursday May 11, the boys and girls lacrosse teams topped off their season with a co-ed match. This friendly game had some special rulings so that each team would get to experience the other side’s play: the girls and boys switched sticks and goalies.

The sticks differ in pocket depth, so the boys played with shallower sticks while the girls had to maneuver with a deeper than normal pocket. The girls also adopted the physical rules on the boys side while the boys had to manage a more agile play style of no contact.

Their match tipped off with a female face off. The girls picked up two early goals as they quickly adapted to their new hardware. Likewise, the boys picked up the girls play style and tied it up at two a piece before the game was a quarter of the way through. The girls then took control and scored six consecutive goals to make it 8-2 in the middle of the second half. The boys didn’t give up though and score two goals before the final whistle blew with a final score of 8-4 for the Girls.

Avery Johnson had a stand-out performance for the girls. One of her plays consisted of an around the back juke to beat a defender followed by a tidy finish. Justin Mildenberger was the boys’ stand-out player. He showed great speed and agility when he single-handedly scored two unanswered goals within two minutes of play.

The match was topped off with a little unorthodox refreshment from the girls to the boys. At the sound of the final whistle, the girls rushed off the field and dove into a deep bucket of water balloons. The boys were ambushed with the balloons and threw back any unpopped ammo that was available. This final fight symbolized the purpose of the entire event: a competitive atmosphere with fun for everyone.
