Dr. Nelson assists students in a suture lesson

Today, Medical Intervention students put down their books and picked up scalpels and forceps to participate in a hands on lesson to simulate surgery.

Dr. Tom Nelson, a surgeon from Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital came to speak and mentor future surgeons on the basics of surgery. The students simulated a suture procedure using microscopic tools, needle and thread, and mock tissue.

“We are learning stuff that happens in real life, that isn’t usually taught in school,”  junior Tina Stanley proclaimed while sewing up fake tissue.

From tying tissue back together after a laceration to closing an open organ, students were exposed to a number of simulations and circumstances that a surgeon might face while performing on a patient.
