Approaching Surf Season Comes with Many Exciting Plans for the Team

As pumpkin-spice lattes are becoming available and the fall season is quickly approaching, October brings another festivity that people tend to forget: surf season.

Although it is not recognized as a CIF sport, the surf team creates a competitive environment. The members consider their club a team sport that allows them to build strong bonds with teammates in and out of the water.

Surf team captain Aiden Cannon’s main goal for the season is continuing to place in tournaments as well as having a fun season with the team.

“One of the best times is when you get your entire friend group and all the new friends you make throughout the year and hype each other up in surf contests,” Cannon says with a smile.

Aiden’s father, surf team Coach Jeremy Cannon, also added his thoughts about the previous season. Whether you’re competing or rooting for the team, Coach Cannon claims that every competition is a load of fun.

“We basically make every competition day a big family beach day,” he says.

He also believes that the team can only work on improving from their previous success last year. By the end of the season, they were tied for second place with San Marcos. One team member even placed first overall in the men’s division.

“This year, I want to focus on taking more photos so that we can create a really cool log of all our fun days that we have together as a team,” Coach Cannon said.

This past Thursday, the team held a meeting during lunch to go over the upcoming season.

“It looks to me like our team size has more than doubled,” Coach Cannon comments when asked about the turnout for the meeting, “on top of having a lot more freshman participants, we have a lot more females athletes that are interested in joining the surf club this year which is really great because last year we had none.”

Along with gathering the returning members of the club, the coach had hoped to reach out to other athletes, which seems like a successful endeavor after the meeting.

The sun sets after a fun day at the beach. The surf club is run by the Scholastic Surf Series but still identifies as a Sage Creek specific team.

The exciting new additions to the team will definitely set the team up for success this season.

There are many ways to get involved if you’re interested in joining the surf team. Whether or not you attended the meeting, a good next step would be to check out the surf club booth at Club Rush Oct. 2. There is also information on the Sage Creek website and morning announcements about meetings, practices, etc. If you have any questions, previous members of the surf club would also be willing to help pass along information.

“One of the most rewarding things in surfing is just realizing that you’re getting better every time you surf,” Cannon says.
