Ever since On Stranger Tides made over a billion dollars back in 2011, Disney has been waiting for the follow-up in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. Now, Jack Sparrow and his swashbuckling crew return in their latest installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales. Is the film any good? Is it better than the other sequels? Let’s find out.

Dead Men Tell No Tales takes place six years after the events of On Stranger Tides. The story revolves around a mysterious boy (played by Brenton Thwaites), a girl who happens to be a scientist (played by Kaya Scodelario), and the notorious pirate himself, Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp). When ghost pirates led by Captain Salazar (played by Javier Bardem) take control of the sea, it’s up to Sparrow and his crew to find the trident of Poseidon to reclaim control of the seven seas.

When it comes to these films, they always deliver when it comes to visual effects. The visual effects in this film were really well-done and work well in the context of the film. The CGI work on Captain Salazar was some of the best effects in the entire film.

Other than the great visuals, the film has a plethora of problems. The first glaring problem with the film is the lack of good storytelling. In my opinion, this has been an occurring factor in the previous installments. In Dead Men Tell No Tales, the story is very generic and boring to follow.

The second big problem is the cast and crew themselves. Besides Barbossa (played by Geoffrey Rush) and Captain Salazar, no one else in the film seems like they wanted to be there. Depp, who plays Jack Sparrow, seemed very washed out compared to his other performances in the previous installments. He doesn’t seem as excited to play his role than Rush and Bardem. The new cast members (Brenton Thwaites & Kaya Scodelario) were the worst actors of the entire film. Both of them deliver their lines very thin and stale. They reminded me of Nicole Peltz and Jack Reynor from Transformers: Age Of Extinction (That’s really bad).

The third and final problem with the film is that there is no feeling of adventure or magic in this installment(Get it, because Disney owns the Pirates franchise). The other Pirates films, while not being perfect movies, all had certain charms to them that made them re-watchable. However, with this film, there are no memorable moments that will make audiences want to come back and watch it a second time.

It goes without say that I do not recommend watching Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. If you are a huge Pirates fan, then this is definitely something you might want to check out. For everybody else, wait until the film gets released on Blu-Ray and save your money for Wonder Woman this Friday.
